Transforming Pro-Am Racing: The Innovative Approach of the GT Summer Series

Launching this April at Hockenheim, the GT Summer Series (GTSS) aims to redefine Pro-Am racing by addressing the challenges typically faced by amateur drivers.

The world of Pro-Am racing is often characterized by a familiar narrative: ambitious drivers overwhelmed by the adrenaline and excitement of high-speed competition, leading to congested turn-one collisions and escalating tensions in the paddocks. Yet, the upcoming GT Summer Series, debuting at Hockenheim this April, is making strides to transcend this narrative.

To navigate the challenges associated with an eager grid of aspiring racers from GT3, GT4, and one-make Cup categories, series promoter Gedlich Racing has enlisted an authority figure whose credentials demand respect from even the most seasoned gentleman driver: the legendary Frank Biela, a five-time Le Mans champion. He will take on the pivotal role of “Driver’s Mentor” within the series.

In an exclusive interview, Series Coordinator Stefan Lehner and Gedlich Racing CEO Robin Selbach, alongside the illustrious Biela, share their vision for eliminating the customary chaos that often plagues amateur racing and the rationale behind appointing such a globally respected motorsport icon to oversee the paddock.

The Role of the Driver’s Mentor

Question: “Stefan, Pro-Am racing is notorious for turn-one chaos and heated arguments in the paddock. Will the ‘Driver’s Mentor’ simply be a chaperone for amateur racers in the GT Summer Series?”
Stefan Lehner: “The GT Summer Series is designed primarily for amateurs and newcomers; however, experienced drivers will also be participating. The goal is to create an environment where newcomers can learn the ropes without the usual pitfalls. We aim to accelerate their acclimatization to the racing atmosphere. The ‘Driver’s Mentor’ will offer guidance, support, and coaching on race situations and interaction with fellow competitors. Furthermore, he will act as a mediator in any disputes that may arise.”

Why Frank Biela?

Question: “Robin, what makes Frank Biela the right choice for this role? Surely, a five-time Le Mans winner could find better ways to spend his weekends than refereeing gentleman drivers?”
Robin Selbach: “Frank Biela stands as one of the most successful touring and sports car drivers Germany has ever produced. His five Le Mans victories and his stellar career in top-level racing establish his credentials. Biela is recognized for both his exceptional speed and his fair racing style. His calm demeanor makes him the ideal candidate to mentor and support drivers effectively.”

The Responsibilities of a Mentor

Question: “Frank, what does a typical race weekend look like for you as ‘Driver’s Mentor’?”
Frank Biela: “I am excited to lend my experience to enhance the overall quality of racing during the GT Summer Series. My objective is to share insights gained throughout my professional career to aid less experienced drivers. I view myself as both a friend and a coach, as well as a liaison between the drivers and race control. In situations where conflicts occur on the track, I aim to facilitate understanding through open dialogue and the use of video analysis.”

Hands-On Coaching and Support

Question: “Coaching a novice in a high-performance GT3 car comes with significant responsibility. How involved will you be during race weekends?”
Biela: “I will be present throughout the weekend, accessible to all drivers and teams. We plan to conduct tailored coaching sessions focusing on various aspects, including overtaking techniques, starting procedures, and even managing the pressures that come with leading a race. For instance, if a rookie finds themselves in pole position for their first time, I will guide them on throttle application, corner handling, and dealing with the excitement of leading a race. We’ll also cover media and public relations skills, ensuring a well-rounded development experience for each driver.”

Measuring Success

Question: “Looking ahead to the end of the 2026 season, how will you assess the success of this mentoring initiative?”
Biela: “I hope to reflect on a season where I significantly contributed to making GT Summer Series drivers exhibit greater professionalism and safety on the track. The true measure of success will be feedback from drivers and teams indicating that my input facilitated their growth in motorsport.”
